Ted Stubbersfield - International External Timber Design Consultant
The design of weather exposed timber structure such as decks, boardwalks and bridges that age gracefully, requires a depth of knowledge and breadth of experience that, internationally, only a few timber design professionals possess.
The extra skills needed go beyond an appreciation of the science involved. They are a thorough understanding of the art of timber detailing, of material supply and, of construction techniques. Understandably only few posses these skills as they are seldom taught and take a lifetime to acquire.
Expert Witness
I provide expert witness reports through the very prestigious firm of consultants BCRC › Where I am a senior Timber Consultant ›
Timber Grading
As a timber grader I can assist with grading for confirmation to a nominated grade but, more importantly, I can assess whether timber is graded to an appropriate grade. Often these are not the same thing. I wrote the book on the subject: Grading Hardwood - Understanding AS2082 ›
Author
I have the ability to research many timber related subjects and write reports/guides/books on the subject. I can also write short articles on the subject.
Conference Speaker
I have spoken at a number of conferences and welcome opportunities to share what I have learned over my lifetime with the next generation.

Weather Exposed Timber
Working as the Director of Outdoor Structures Australia (OSA) till 2012 I developed a sound understanding of weather exposed timber structures. This ability was deepened considerably as I further researched my Timber Design File Series › Few in our country can match my ability to maximise the life of very expensive timber infrastructure.
Now that I am no longer working for OSA I am free to offer a range of consultancy services in this field by providing design assistance and timber grading.
In our area of expertise, often it is the art that proves more important than the science. Weather exposed structures normally do not fail because of incorrect member size calculations, but because a myriad of small points of detail are not taken care of.
